Students’ Concept Images of Unit Fractions

Sat, April 5, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

This study investigated children’s concept images of unit fractions through written questions and one-one verbal interview question. Forty (40) fifth graders were selected as the participants, since they had studied fractions for almost 3 years before being involved in this research and had had considerable exposure to the concepts. Results showed that the fifth graders tended to represent fractions using area models, and their concept images of unit fractions were very narrow and mainly linked to area models.
