Validation of a School District Teacher Observational Measure Used in the Teacher Evaluation Process

Abstract

Observational rubrics used for teacher evaluations are high stakes and validity evidence is needed to support the use of these scores in making decisions about teachers’ performance. Data from 6441 teachers from one school district in Florida were used to examine the validity of an observational rubric (34 items and five factors) based on Marzano’s and Danielson’s frameworks. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the fit of the five-factor structure underlying the rubric. Internal consistency reliabilities for the five observational scales and total score ranged from .81 to .96. Years teaching experience and National Board Certification status were positively related to teachers’ observational scores.
