Transforming Ourselves and Our Students: A Collaborative Effort to Understand Practice for/in Cultural Competence

Abstract

Collaborative self study can be used as a powerful tool to transform one’s teaching practice. Through a) studying one’s own pedagogy, b) observing another teacher’s practice and reflecting on what was personally learned, and c) sharing these reflections and “a-ha” moments together, the teachers in this study gained numerous pedagogical insights for how to model and teach cultural competence effectively to their students. In this paper, we target two audiences as we discuss the implications of collaborative self study on teacher educators: (1) teacher educators who are new to the work of bringing a critical lens to foundations or methods courses, and (2) teacher educators who have experience teaching classes that focus on racial equity and other social justice causes.
