Abstract

Progress toward student achievement is possible when the teachers in K12 classrooms and school libraries put educational research into action. Teachers can use action research as a means to pursue innovations in their practice. Though pre-service teachers might have instruction in action research, they do not have a classroom or library in which to conduct research. Providing professional development in action research to in-service teachers solves this problem. This study explores a large-scale professional development effort that provided instruction in action research to in-service school librarians. The goal of the project was to take the teachers beyond the awareness of what action research involves to the point where they were able to view themselves as action researchers.
