Abstract

The purpose of this research is to understand the relationship between socioeconomic status and achievement of students who attend high school in Canada versus those who attend high school in the United States (US). Past research has shown that a significant achievement gap exists between high- versus low-income students in the United States, and that this gap is growing. Motivated by that finding, this paper seeks to understand to what extent this pattern may be similar for Canadian and US students. The pattern of achievement of high-versus low-income high school students in Canada is compared to that of high school students in the US in the subjects of reading, mathematics, and science.
