Toward a Holistic Approach to the Moral Development of Educational Leaders

Abstract

This paper takes the form of narrative inquiry, one of self-reflection, deliberation, and critique about a series of research and leadership development projects. These projects were intended to cultivate development of morally literate and responsive leaders in education including higher education faculty, master teachers in education-based incarceration programs, and students themselves. The initiatives were grounded in values and educational leadership including self-reflection, morality, a framework for teaching personal and social responsibility, and spiritual dimension of leadership development. This session includes narrative description of each project, critical analysis of the collective impact of the projects, and discussion of the implications for theory and practice as related to the holistic (i.e., mind, body, spirit) development of educational leaders.
