Urban Schooling and Teacher Education: Responding to the Nature of Socioeconomically and Intellectually Stratifying Standards

Abstract

Policy makers set standards for teaching and learning to improve teaching and learning that do not reflect the qualities of economically successful organizations, as represented in research on the economics of innovation and the qualities of schooling and teaching urban schoolchildren identify as important. Creative problem solving, risk-taking, and collaborative inquiry across settings distinguish entrepreneurially successful organizations and urban teaching and learning, as defined by students, are lacking in standards set for learning, teaching and learning to teach. This paper examines the research on the economics of innovation, presents an analysis of standards for teaching, learning, and learning and teach and posits ways to create future urban school settings distinguished by the creativity found in highly successful, innovative organizations.
