Paths to Peace Education: Comparisons Across Generations

Abstract

Peace education has not yet become in secular schools an established goal for student learning. Hence, research on educators who have generated peace-oriented learning opportunities illuminates factors that have associated with such accomplishments. The paths to peace education vary yet have commonalities. Exploration of the signposts on the paths reveals determinants for the directions taken. This historical research employed an ex post facto method for analysis of autobiographic data that the participants in the study voluntarily provided. The findings revealed commonalities within differences. The factors identified may be useful in teacher preparation and citizenship education of youth. The common factors included involvement orientation, keen awareness of structural conflicts, first-hand role models for action and connection with others in that pursuit.
