Urban Students’ Motivation for and Perception of Science Fair Participation

Abstract

This case study provides insight into a highly popular, yet scarcely studied learning environment – the science fair. This study provides a detailed description of factors that motivate urban students to participate in a county science fair as well as their perceptions of their participation. A total of 246 students in grades 7-12 completed a survey during the city’s annual science fair. Results indicate that learning new things, having fun, and preparing for the future are the top reasons that motivate students to participate in the science fair. Teachers, parents, and the students themselves are most frequently the individuals who provide the motivation or encouragement to participate. The majority of students positively perceive their participation.
