Abstract

Live virtual classroom (LVC) tools such as Adobe Connect and WebEx (among others) can be combined with learning management system (LMS) tools to increase the effectiveness, efficiency, and engagement of blended online learning. This study uses the framework of classroom orchestration to analyze how instructors in the U. S. and internationally execute particular instructional activities (e.g., lecture, discussion, collaboration) in asynchronous (LMS) or synchronous (LVC) delivery modes. Results show that experienced LMS instructors tend to resist or marginalize LVC activities while instructors familiar with face-to-face instruction but not experienced with LMS tend to rely on LVC for familiar instructional activities such as lecture.
