Effects of Structure Strategy Instruction on Chinese Students Reading English Expository Texts

Abstract

Structure strategy is a well-tested approach to improving students’ reading comprehension by helping them focus on text organization, generate inferences, monitor understanding, and show better recalls from the expository texts. In this study, we examined the effects of structure strategy instruction on strategy use of 173 Chinese senior high school students in reading English expository texts. We also investigated whether different content area specialties influence their strategy use. The results showed that the intervention enhanced students’ ability to write main ideas following the author’s organizational structure, but it did not significantly affect the organization or accuracy of recalls. Meanwhile, students from science track improved much more than their peers from liberal arts track on comparison main idea tasks.
