Sexuality Education Policy Implementation in Two Rural Midwestern Communities: A Case Study

Sat, April 5, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

The topic of sexuality education has garnered the attention of educators, religious and political leaders, and parents with even more increased vigor in recent decades. However, the debate over how to properly educate young people on matters of sex and sexuality is by no means recent. My study sought to interrogate the sexuality education debate from the perspective of the educational policy being implemented in two rural midwestern communities to achieve established curricular requirements and goals. Very little research has examined the way in which sexuality education curricula are implemented in these communities. Local characteristics impact implementation, and their differences from more urban communities necessitate a closer look at the process of educational policy implementation in this critical curricular area.
