Understanding complex systems is necessary for students pursuing careers in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) because the fundamental constructs of complex systems apply across many domains and are at the heart of the solutions to many global issues facing the world today (National Science Foundation, 2009). This study examined complex systems understanding with the use of an agent-based simulation called the UVA Bay Game. Using a mixed methods, cross-case analysis, this exploratory study examined how participants in three separate undergraduate architecture systems and environmental science courses experienced changes in complex systems understanding through the development of concept maps and written reflections of their learning. Positive learning outcomes were reported across cases, as well as some misconceptions.
