The discussion of validity of mixed methods is still in its infancy compared to that of quantitative and qualitative research. This paper attempts to address this issue using philosophical and methodological insights generated from Habermas’ critical theory. In the Logic of the Social Sciences (1988) and The Theory of Communicative Action (1985, 1987), Habermas analyzed the possibility of integrating different approaches in research and developed three kinds of validity claims: objective, subjective, and normative. These claims are consistent with respective philosophical assumptions of quantitative and qualitative research. An example of how to use validity claims to understand a mixed methods study is also provided.
