Working When “Your Needs Have Gone out the Window”: Parenting in the Pretenure Career

Abstract

Drawing on data collected as part of a larger study of what it means to flourish in the pre-tenure career, this paper presents findings related to the perceived challenge of having and raising children during the early faculty career. It also suggests several strategies that flourishing faculty (defined as processors who are simultaneously attentive to their passions and their communities while experiencing a sense of joy in their work) employ to manage their professional and family obligations in ways that they experience as largely positive.
