The Relationship of Demographics and Family Factors to Asian Immigrant Adolescents’ Academic Achievement

Abstract

This study explored the academic achievement of Asian immigrant high school students by considering demographic and family characteristics, in particular family cohesion and parent-child conflict. Comparisons were made with Hispanic immigrant high school students. Although the two groups shared SES characteristics and high parent education aspirations, the Asian students had higher GPAs. The Asian students held higher education aspirations for themselves and had less parent-child conflict, both related to school success. Hispanic students reported better language proficiencies and more family cohesion, neither of which were related to school success.
