Prime Online: Teacher Professional Development for Inclusive Elementary Mathematics Classrooms

Abstract

Prime Online is a year-long, online professional development program for both elementary and special education teachers. Prime Online targets 1) mathematics content in number sense, multiplication, division, and rational number; 2) teacher inquiry; and, 3) students with learning disabilities (LD) and other struggling learners in grades 3 to 5. Funded by the Institute of Education Sciences, Prime Online involved two separate cohorts of general and special education teachers in design-based research studies. Findings indicate high levels of teacher satisfaction, and improvement on measures of teachers’ Content Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (CKTM; Ball et al., 2003), and in their reported beliefs and classroom practices. Results also hold promise for student learning.
