Please Pardon the Interruption: A Qualitative Analysis of Daily Announcements From American High Schools

Abstract

Daily announcements are a ubiquitous feature of American high schools. They serve as both artifacts of school cultures and a means of delivering hidden curricula. Despite their pervasiveness, daily announcements have largely gone unexamined. Our study began addressing this deficit through a focused and thorough content analysis of a national sample of daily announcements collected from high school websites. Our analysis was driven by the question: What can we learn about the culture of the American high school by studying the content of the messages schools are putting on the web for stakeholders to view? The purpose of this paper is to describe the seven themes that emerged from the analysis of that set of daily announcements.
