Educators need reliable and valid measures for fair and credible systems of accountability. In a two-phase study, researchers calculated correlations between teacher candidate performance on the edTPA and a state evaluation system (TEAM). Candidate performance on three edTPA criteria (planning to develop understanding of subject matter, planning based on knowledge of students, critical reflection on practice) are highly correlated with the TEAM rubric spotlighting the ability to engage students in activities that provide focus, challenge, relevance, choice, and opportunities for students to think, reflect, and interact. A second notable correlation is between the edTPA criterion for scaffolding academic language development and the TEAM criteria of instructional planning and structure.
