This systematic review interrogates research on academic motivation in the English-speaking Caribbean. Through document analysis, this study identifies the theoretical frameworks through which academic motivation has been explored, reveals student motivation characteristics, and identifies gaps in knowledge concerning academic motivation in this region. Twenty two studies are included in this study. Preliminary results demonstrate that various theoretical frameworks have been employed to understand student academic motivation; however, there is a lack of instruments developed in this region to appropriately measure this construct. Further exploratory work and instrument development are needed so researchers could move towards developing a sound profile of students in this region and possibly give birth to a new model for understanding academic motivation within the Caribbean context.
