Understanding the Experiences of High-Potential, Hispanic English Language Learners in Out-of-School Programs

Sun, April 6, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 107B

Abstract

The underrepresentation of high-potential Hispanic students in gifted programs remains a severe and pervasive problem. This study focused on Hispanic ELLs in grades 2 through 6 and their experiences in enrichment programs for gifted students. Fourteen students, 13 parents, and 22 teachers comprised the sample. The purpose was to gain better understanding of the students' experiences in the university-based programs. Students revealed that they enjoyed their experience in the programs, that they perceived the programs as different from school, and discussed positive effects the programs had on their motivation, confidence, attitude toward school, and career interests. Results indicate that high-potential Hispanic ELLs can benefit from out-of-school programming and the need for focusing on their strengths rather than on their deficits.
