Shoot for the Moon: The Mentors and the Middle Schoolers Explore STEM Learning and Design Thinking

Fri, April 4, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 113C

Abstract

This paper describes a STEM-based afterschool curriculum program for underserved middle school students that was created and implemented by a group of university students. The inspiration behind the program was the "Design for the Other 90% Movement,” which consists of engineers, designers, and scientists engaged in designing innovative solutions for those who do not have access to basic services. The afterschool program was developed as part of a university course. Students taking the course were studying engineering, science and mathematics. The overall goals in working with middle schoolers were to provide students with pathways into STEM careers, to introduce design thinking as a 21st century learning approach, and to foster the development of mentoring relationships.
