From Cities to Suburbs: Perspectives on Residential Migration Patterns Among Minority Groups

Abstract

Between 1990 and 2010, there have been remarkable demographic shifts that have occurred in the US that have implications for our approach to education and social policy. In addition to a significant rise in the proportional representation of minorities in the US, there have also been notable changes to in-state and between-state migration patterns of specific minority groups. This presentation shares findings from research on the shifting residential patterns in California and discusses implications for the education system relative to postsecondary opportunity structures. Specifically, the author will present on: 1) descriptive data from the US Census Bureau to discuss the rise of minority groups in suburban communities, 2) analysis of data from the California Department of Education on academic performance and educational outcomes of minorities in cities and suburbs, and 3) discuss implications for state policy related to college outreach and admissions practices.
