We live in a visual world. We are constantly bombarded by visual stimuli. As students make their way through schooling, the focus of lessons invariably changes. The visual culture of pictures and drawings that formed the basis of earlier lessons becomes discarded in favor of written work. However, due to problems with literacy levels generally and a progressive influx of English Language Learners into schools, other, more novels ways of teaching must be incorporated to help students become literate.
This poster will examine research settings where photographs have been used. It will make a case on behalf of the photo elicitation method, highlighting its diverse affordances: diversity, affect, identity, intimacy, criticism, expression, and respect.
