Abstract

In February 2012, NYC released value added rankings for over 5,000 public school teachers. There has been little concern about the potential impact of the release of this information on the housing values, or residential segregation of NYC dwellers. The data not only provides NYC homebuyers with new data on the quality of their schools, it also provides them with a different level of data that was not previously available. As this data is made public, the neighboring areas might change in reaction to moving out of school zones with ineffective teachers and the moving into school zones with effective teachers. The findings suggest that the release of teacher quality information may have large implications on housing and school demographics.
