Thu, April 3, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between organizational ties and college access among teenagers in an underserved, low-income neighborhood in New York City. The paper uses data from a summer bridge program at North Point for Change, a community-based organization, to illustrate the lives of young African American and Latino adults and influences of social capital as they navigate diverse pathways to postsecondary education. The author finds that, while outcomes vary among participants, the majority obtains and uses valuable organizational ties and resources.
