How Does an Immigrant Mother Participate in Her Child’s Schooling? An Autoethnography of a Korean Mother

Mon, April 7, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrrace Level, Terrace III

Abstract

Parental involvement is important for their students' learning and the equal and just school systems. Even though the clear necessity has been discussed in academia, the practical guidelines to strengthen parental involvement have not been adequately studied. Hence, this study, using an autoethnogrpahy methodology, explored the case of a Korean immigrant mother over the course of a year as I first encountered a child’s public school in the U.S. Several strategies were identified with teachers’ appropriate knowledge, skills, and beliefs including school policy. This paper highlights the parental involvement as the active agents in education.
