Supporting Students With High Special Educational Needs in Transitions: Why Teams Matter

Abstract

Students with high special educational needs can have frequent changes to their educational settings. Additionally they are likely to receive support from a range of different teachers and specialists, based in a range of different agencies. Both teaming and transitions provide challenges for supporting students with high special educational needs. This paper analyses the role of teams in transitions of these students in two different contexts in New Zealand:
• From early childhood to school; and
• From residential to local schools, or vice versa, for children and young people with highly complex and challenging behaviour, (sometimes also associated with an intellectual impairment).
