Fri, April 4, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to explore cultural influence on advising international students at community colleges. More specifically, through the face-negotiation theory, this study intends to provide a better understanding about roles that face plays in cross-cultural communication between international advisees and the U.S. advisors. It also aimed to identify strategies that advisors could employ in helping international students achieve positive, productive academic experiences. This research benefits the entire advising community, educational researchers, and policymakers as a means to obtain better understandings of cultural differences, negotiation strategies, and international students’ academic experiences at community colleges.
