The Geography of School Choice: A Multilevel Perspective on the Transition From Elementary to Secondary School

Sun, April 6, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, 404

Abstract

In the light of the implementation of a new school-type the “New Middle School “, which declares itself to be a school “for all children” and able to reduce social and regional disparities in school enrolment behaviour, a hierarchical multi-level analysis was conducted. The analysis of over 1,800 school transitions assumes that in spite of the new school-type, changes in school enrolment behaviour are not observable. Regional disparities seem to be persistent over time. The paper provides a more differentiated insight into the complex structure of school-choice by investigating the relationship of these contextual factors.
