There is much literature on how to build online communities, as well as how to ensure learning within these communities, yet the barriers to online learning unique to professional settings or workplaces are not clearly understood. Implementing a professional online learning community can provide instant access to company resources and revolutionize how companies develop their employees. Since online learning communities could be an edge over competitors, especially for global organizations, research is needed to explore the successful features, barriers, and unique considerations required for professional online learning communities. The purpose of this paper is to review the extant literature and apply the tenets of the community of inquiry (CoI) framework to better understand online learning communities in professional settings.
