Implementing Learning Analytics Based on Data of Blogging Portfolios to Improve Teacher Preparation

Thu, April 3, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

This study implemented learning analytics based on data of 41 teacher candidate blogging portfolios (bPortfolios) with the tools of an assessment of teacher reflection and a text analysis using semantic linguistic algorithms from Semantria. The assessment of teacher reflection in blogs created a shared understanding of success and challenges in teacher education. Upon integration of multiple data resources, a teacher reflection predictive model was built (F=2.8, p=.03) that could be beneficial in developing strategies to promote teacher reflection. Learning analytics based on data of bPortfolios is suggested to be applied in teacher education to provide insights into teacher candidate learning processes and field practices. Such evidence could inform instructional strategy design and decision making to improve teacher preparation.
