Recent theory and research has extolled the potential of transmediation in expanding learners’ analytical and critical insight. However, this approach requires teachers who are prepared to employ this multimodal way of knowing in their classroom practice. This research explores the implementation of transmediative activities with pre-service teachers and examines their comprehension of multicultural texts, their critical engagement with this literature, and the impact of this experience on their intended teaching practice. Findings suggest that presenting and supporting transmediation as a critical literacy approach can have a powerful effect on pre-service teachers’ understanding of texts and on their beliefs about teaching and learning.
