Fri, April 4, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

Many developing countries are committed to implementing inclusive practices for diverse learners; however, due to lack of resources and training educators have struggled in implementation. The purpose of this study was to assess educators’ perspectives on their training, knowledge, and practice in inclusive practices; provide professional development workshops on assessing students’ strengths and needs at the university and government school levels; and evaluate the effectiveness of the training. Surveys and interviews were administered to 47 preservice teachers, 23 university faculty, and 90 teachers in 3 South African provinces. The data were analyzed to develop individualized seminars for each site. Results and implications of the research are discussed along with recommendations for empowering schools, districts, universities, and the department of education.
