Reengaging High School Dropouts and At-Risk Students: An Evaluation of Philadelphia’s Accelerated High Schools

Sun, April 6, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

This paper will present findings from a two year mix-methods evaluation of the School District of Philadelphia’s accelerated high schools. In the District, accelerated high schools are run by private providers and are designed to serve students who are over-age and under-credited, students who have previously dropped out of school, or who are at a high risk of dropout. Findings will be co-presented by the study principal investigator and District representatives who work closely with accelerated school providers. The presentation will provide historical background related to the development of the accelerated schools, profile the student population served by these schools, review key strategies these schools employ to meet their students’ needs, and present students’ retention, credit accumulation and graduation outcomes.
