The article analyzes (1) teacher candidates´ vocational interests and the specific requirements of teacher training programs, and (2) different methods of calculating congruence (Person-Environment fit) in prospective teachers. We surveyed data from 500 teacher candidates enrolled in teacher training programs in science, linguistics, arts, and sports as well as 41 teacher educators at university. We examined correlations of several congruence measures with various criteria of study motivation and success. Teacher-specific profiles seem to depend first on the domain of selected studies (e.g., science vs. linguistic/arts) and second on the method applied to obtain environmental codes (i.e., psychosocial vs. requirement-based approach). Moreover, our data indicate a high validity of dimensionally calculated congruence measures instead of classical typological measures.
