Abstract

“Traveling intellectuals” is an analysis of the discourses of academics who feel that the dictatorship had a strong impact on the development and construction of knowledge in the social sciences in Chile during the last forty years. Based on a qualitative study about academic mobility and the intellectual in academia, this paper reflects upon how the construction of knowledge in Chilean academia is highly influenced by neoliberal policies developed during the dictatorship in the 70s and 80s. In this sense, academic mobility becomes a journey where intellectuals encounter their own history and find a temporary shelter from which they can view the position of social sciences and humanities with distance, anonymity and freedom.
