Understanding Factors Contributing to Timely Doctoral Degree Completion Among Underrepresented Students

Abstract

This qualitative study examined the factors that contribute to timely doctoral degree completion among underrepresented doctoral students (students of color and women). The findings from this study are categorized under the following themes: Preparation for and expectations of doctoral study; Personal motivation; Expectations of timely degree completion; Program structure; Advising; and Dissertation topic The findings of this study have implications for how faculty can better advise and support underrepresented students, improve student success, recruit graduates to the professoriate.
