This paper presents the impact of an onsite “just in time” mental health counseling program on high risk middle and high school students. Participants included middle and high school students in an urban district with documented academic and behavioral problems served onsite by counselors hired from a community agency. Results indicated overall positive academic and behavioral change in students. Cross-examination of the data suggested intervention type and specific reasons for encounters with the students may play an important role in academic and/or behavioral change. Initial results have implications for the impact of school-based mental health counseling in providing proactive services, preventing problems that could escalate into violence-related incidents, unsafe schools, and detrimental behaviors for the students themselves.
