Teacher Mentoring in an Urban Environment: Black Mentors and White Teachers

Sun, April 6, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrrace Level, Terrace III

Abstract

This paper presents findings from a qualitative interview study of the relationships between black mentor teachers and their white first year teacher mentees in an urban school system. The findings illustrate the ways in which race matters in the mentoring relationship and how beliefs about race affect trust and communication. It also explores the lack of conversation around perceptions of race between mentors and mentees.
