A Model for Supplementing Reader’s Advisory Services to K-3 Students Using Augmented Reality Mobile Technologies

Abstract

Reader’s advisory (RA) services for elementary students can quickly suffer when school libraries are impacted by insufficient staffing, large class sizes, and limited time for browsing and selection. However, it may be possible to supplement those critical RA services through the pairing of mobile technologies and augmented reality (AR). This paper advocates integrating AR into a school library, specifically targeting pre-and emerging readers in grades K-3. Two use cases are presented to demonstrate the potential value of developing an AR system for use in a school library, and issues of technological requirements, user interfaces, and content access and retrieval/display are discussed.
