The Role of Child Care Quality in Promoting Resilience in the Social-Emotional Development of Preschoolers

Abstract

The study aims to identify the role of process quality in child care centers regarding the relation between multiple risks and children’s competences and problems. The sample consists of 162 children (74 girls) between three and five years (M=3.83, SD=.49). We specifically investigated the moderating role of process quality on the relation between multiple risks and children’s competences and problems. Results show that the process quality is associated with different aspects of children’s problems and predicted teacher reported prosocial behavior. Furthermore, high process quality can buffer the negative effects of multiple risks on children's emotional problems, hyperactivity and self-efficacy. The paper will discuss the results and the need of promoting high child care quality concerning resilience processes in early childhood.
