Beginning the Teacher Induction Process in a Summer Enrichment Program for Minority Students

Sun, April 6, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

The summer enrichment program provides recent certified elementary and special education graduates of a teacher education program with a non-evaluative experience in an urban setting while simultaneously limiting the summer slide that many urban students experience because of summer academic inactivity. The program has an objective of beginning the induction process during the summer prior to them beginning their teaching career. Two research questions guided the focus of this study. Those questions were: (1) What is the impact of an urban experience on elementary teacher education graduates in relation to teacher induction; and, (2) Can participating in a summer program as teachers begin the induction process of beginning teachers the summer prior to their first year teaching experience?
