Possible Common Correlates Between Bullying and Cyberbullying in Youth

Abstract

This cross-sectional correlational study investigated possible individual characteristics associated with cyber-bullying/victimization (CB/V) and school bullying/ victimization (SB/V) among Greek youth and their contribution in the prediction of the phenomena. A sample of 146 junior high school students completed a self-report questionnaire, measuring CB/V, SB/V, internet disinhibition, personality traits, social skills and relations and internet use. Results indicated that a significant percentage of students participated concurrently in both CB/V and SB/V, and have common characteristics. Internet disinhibition and psychopathic traits were positive correlates of all phenomena, whereas affective empathy was a negative correlate. Sensation seeking, internet disinhibition, and grandiose-manipulative traits were the best predictors of SB and CB, whereas CV was predicted by internet disinhibition.
