Mathematics in a Second-Grade Classroom: The Effects of Cognitively Guided Problem Solving

Fri, April 4, 8:15 to 10:15am, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, 204B

Abstract

Problem solving has been a focus of mathematics education, but still proves elusive for many students. Guided mathematics problem solving, focused on progressing solution strategy complexity, was used with a class of second grade students with a wide range of mathematics ability. Results showed that the students not only became efficient problem solvers of addition and subtraction word problems, but also we able to discuss their solution strategies and learn from each other. This has significant importance related to the mathematical practices outlined in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
