There is a need for increased use of standardized measures in teacher education. These standardized measures need to demonstrate links to important educational outcomes. This study sought to build the science of teacher education through the examination of the implementation of two standardized measures in one teacher education program over a three year period. The Video Assessment of Interactions and Learning (VAIL) assessed participants’ ability to identify effective teaching strategies in video-recorded lessons. Meanwhile, the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) is a standardized observation measure of teaching performance that focuses on teacher-student interactions. Preservice teachers were assessed using both measures in the final year of their teacher education program. Each measure produced important findings which are discussed.
