The Impact of a Physics Inquiry Course on a Student Teacher of Physics

Fri, April 4, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

Research suggests that preservice teachers who have experienced inquiry are more likely to practice the inquiry method in their own classrooms. The exemplar featured in this presentation paper elucidates one teacher’s developing knowledge as he expands his understandings of inquiry in a physics inquiry course and his subsequent enactment of physics curriculum while student teaching. Changes in his personal practical knowledge after participating in a physics inquiry course emerge throughout his story. In addition, several roadblocks encountered when altering curriculum mandates in ways that would enable him to work with the inquiry method are revealed. The implications of this research for informing my personal practice of preparing preservice science and mathematics teachers are discussed.
