Despite increased interest in measuring and improving teacher effectiveness and teacher practice, there is a growing acknowledgement that most current strategies are inadequate to the task. Teachers’ work is complex and all measurement strategies have limitations and sources of invalidity. This paper describes an alternative approach for measuring teachers’ work and the context and environment in which this work occurs. Specifically, it explains how the Day Reconstruction Method (DRM), a novel survey protocol developed by psychologist Daniel Kahneman and colleagues, was adapted for use with teachers to gain a more in depth understanding of teacher practice/work as well as teachers’ work environments.
