Thu, April 3, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 108A

Abstract

As Chicano/a activists, students, and scholars established Chicano/a Studies in the universities, another group developed alternative institutions of higher education in direct rebellion against the U.S. public school system in the late 1960s. This paper is a preliminary attempt to incorporate Chicana/o alternative institutions of higher education into the wider history of education in the United States. I focus on Juárez Lincoln, a Chicano college that mostly operated in Austin, Texas between 1971 and 1979. The paper is based on data gathered from archival research and oral interviews.
