Beyond Accommodations: The Intersections of a Study Abroad Program, Teacher Preparation, and Global Consciousness

Abstract

This paper will bring together research on study abroad opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, Universal Design and social justice education. Our purpose is to demonstrate the ways in which current theory, literature and practice regarding study abroad opportunities for students in the field of education can disrupt hegemonic claims of knowledge and instead foster reciprocal, cross-cultural ways of knowing and learning. This work calls a challenge to “typical” study abroad program formats and seeks to develop alternative ways of facilitating an international educational experience.
